Five Essential Elements Your Patio Needs to Become a Loved Part of Your Home

A patio can be an essential extension of your home’s living space. It can also be a no-man’s-land between your house and the patch of grass you have in your backyard. The difference between the two is design. A well-designed porch and backyard blur the divide, giving you a natural through-point that makes it enticing to head outside for dinner on the patio or to take a moment for your morning coffee.

Not sure how to go from flagstones to a patio worth having? You’ll need to add these five essential elements to get started.

1.    Safety and Essentials

Before you worry about design, you need to think about safety and other essentials. If you have a ground-level patio, you’ll need to make sure that all the stones, tiles, or bricks are properly flat to prevent tripping. If your patio is elevated, then you’ll need a barrier. If you don’t currently have a railing, or your railings are in serious disrepair, then a new deck railing installation is essential.

Even if your patio area is structurally sound, it may be dated or weathered. In this case, you’ll need to repair and refresh the space based on the materials used. A wood patio or deck will need to be sanded and stained, for example.

2.    Frame Your Patio

One of the best ways to make a patio feel like a comfortable space is to frame it. This can be done by adding a low-level divider or plants between your patio and the rest of your backyard. By making it a living wall or a half wall, you soften the transition from outside to inside.

You can also add a pergola or veranda. This helps soften the vertical transition visually by extending the eye beyond the pitch of your roof. As a bonus, you can grow climber plants through these elements to create a living frame that comfortably surrounds your space.

3.    High-Quality Furniture

The quality of your furniture makes a huge difference. One, because high-quality materials are less likely to decay throughout the year and withstand inclement weather. Two, because they’re simply more comfortable. If your outdoor lounger doesn’t have a good cushion, then you likely won’t spend a lot of time on it. And finally, because they look good. A beautiful outdoor living space is one you’ll want to spend time in.

4.    Romantic Lighting

Romantic lighting sets a mood that makes the whole space feel cozier and more inviting. Festoon string lights can set the space in a warm glow that makes eating outside and socializing more comfortable, even after the sun has set. Consider lanterns, candles, and outdoor spotlights as well to add a mixture of functional and romantic lighting.

You should also consider adding lights to your landscaping. This way you can light up the trees and other key shrubs in your garden while you’re outside, so you can continue to enjoy their beauty even after the sun has set. Just make sure all lights are on a timer, so they automatically shut off after, say, 11 pm or midnight.

5.    Heating

Even summer nights can take on a chill. To give you the opportunity to hang out as much as possible, you’ll want to have outdoor blankets, a heater, or an outdoor fire pit. These will help you stay outside for longer, not just throughout the day, but also throughout the season. Click here see more.
